EOS Integrated Cleaning System Photographers who must change lenses in dusty environments will find the advanced Canon EOS Integrated Cleaning System a tremendous time saver. Dust that settles on the sensor surface is removed using ultrasonic vibration. This Self Cleaning Sensor Unit routine is automatically activated whenever the camera is powered on or off. (It can also be manually activated.) A special collar positioned around the sensor collects the loosened dust. Dust particles can also be automatically removed via software. By shooting a plain white subject, the photographer can acquire dust position data that is transmitted along with the image (whether JPEG or RAW). Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) version 3.3 or later software can be used to manually or automatically erase the dust spots. It's not one feature, it's a built-in system to minimize the effect of dust in high-resolution digital images.

Self Cleaning Sensor Unit A key element of minimizing dust is preventing it from clinging to the front surface of the imaging sensor. To combat against this, the EOS Rebel XSi features a Canon-designed Self Cleaning Sensor Unit. The low-pass filter at the front of the sensor shakes off dust automatically with ultrasonic vibrations, removing dust from the sensor assembly. The EOS Rebel XSi has a new coating on the front surface of the low-pass filter, to increase its resistance to dust sticking to the sensor.

Dust Delete Data Detection Dust that may still remain on the front of the sensor can also be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Version 3.3 or later software. A simple test shot of a plain, white object can be taken, using a menu setting. This Dust Delete Data image is analyzed in-camera, and the location and size of any remaining dust is added to any subsequent pictures taken. This data is transmitted along with the image, whether JPEG or RAW, and can be either manually or automatically erased in Canon’s DPP version 3.3 and later software. This added software option ensures the cleanest possible image, perfect for printing or archiving.

Flash Photography The EOS Rebel XSi features the acclaimed E-TTL II flash metering system. With any of the flashes in the EX Speedlite line, E-TTL II provides reliable flash output whether shooting fill-in flash pictures in sunlight, or using flash in total darkness. With E-TTL II, the exact same 35-zone metering sensor used for measuring ambient light is also used for flash metering -- giving even finer metering command of the image area. If you prefer a broader area for flash metering, there's a menu setting to change to "Average" flash metering, where the entire 35-zone area is measured evenly for flash exposure.

The Canon Speedlite 430EX is the ideal step-up accessory for powerful flash shooting with the EOS Rebel XSi. It has excellent flash power (maximum guide number of 141 ft./43m at ISO 100), and is the perfect way to get great flash pictures when you can't get right up to the subject. The 430EX is also great for bounce flash, with its tilting and swiveling flash head. It automatically zooms the flash head to cover lenses ranging from 16mm up to 105mm or longer with the EOS Rebel XSi. Of course, it works with the camera to provide full E-TTL II automatic flash exposure. Digital Photo Professional (Version 3.3) is an image processing program that enables high-speed RAW image processing, high-speed previewing for real-time image adjustment and support for sRGB, Adobe RGB and Wide Gamut RGB color spaces. Because it’s CMS (Color Management System) compatible, Digital Photo Professional allows for easy image layout and printing in Adobe RGB in conjunction with Easy-PhotoPrint and PictBridge printers. EOS Utility (Version 2.3) for Macintosh or Windows handles the connection between the camera and computer, whenever they’re connected via USB. It allows remote controlled shooting from the computer, handles downloading of images from the camera to the computer, and allows seamless linking to either Canon’s ZoomBrowser/ImageBrowser or Digital Photo Professional software once images have been copied to the hard drive. Furthermore, it’s used to upload settings back into a USB-connected camera.

ZoomBrowser EX (Version 6.1) for Windows and ImageBrowser (Version 6.1) for Mac OS X are the easy, user-friendly options for viewing and editing of JPEG and even RAW image files. Both allow viewing of numerous types of images including finished TIFF and BMP files. Both also have a variety of search options for finding images, allow re-naming of single images or batches of files, and offer a variety of options for printing without using a separate image-editing program.

RAW Image Task (Version 2.8) for Windows/Macintosh This software is an integrated component of ZoomBrowser EX (Windows) or ImageBrowser (Mac). It allows processing of RAW images from EOS cameras, including the new EOS Rebel XSi, with a variety of adjustment possibilities. These options, as well as the overall color, contrast and "look" of RAW Image Task, closely mimic the characteristics of Canon’s in-camera JPEG processing.

I bought this Canon because I've had a small one for years and love the ZoomBrowser software that comes with it. AND it took great photos. This is a great camera, and as a nearly total novice, it took me awhile to figure out how to use it, but now I'm satisfied with the quality. However, I installed the software with the discs provided,excitedly connected the camera to my computer to download and found that the software did not include a required .dll file. I have to say I was pretty proud of mysself that I went online, found the file on a free download site and got it all going. BUT WHY DID I HAVE TO DO THIS??? Also, I wish the website had a way to inform a buyer off additional items I would need to operate the camera. I did not have the correct memory card and living out in the middle of nowhere, I spent another week ordering and waiting for the memory card to arrive. OH, well - live and learn!

Exceptional camera for the package and price that you pay! The Canon Digital Rebel XSI camera is a great starter camera if you are interested in digital photography, but will satisfy the intermediate photographer as well. It's easy to use and takes excellent pictures. The owner's manual was very easy to follow and the camera itself is very clear and easy to understand. The 3" LCD monitor is amazing for viewing pictures and the size of the camera is perfect considering it goes everywhere with me.

If you are nervous about stepping into the world of Digital SLR camera's, don't be. This camera will walk you through the steps of capturing great photography. If you are more comfortable with the point-and-shoot aspects of a lower end digital camera, but want to experience manual mode photography, then this camera is everything you are looking for.

I would highly recommend this camera to anyone that is looking to step it up in the world of digital photography. If you are just beginning or have intermediate experience with photography, you won't be disappointed with this purchase.

IS dramatically reduces image blur caused by camera shake. The EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM features Canon's latest 3-stop IS, a one-stop improvement over its predecessor. This allows shutter speeds up to three stops slower than would otherwise be possible, with no perceptible increase in image blur. Photographers normally shooting a 300mm frame handheld at 1/500 second can obtain the equivalent result with a shutter speed of just 1/60 second, vastly extending options in low-light conditions.

For shooting while panning to follow a moving subject, Mode 2 turns off correction in the panned direction and prevents the effect of dragging the subject back through the frame. IS switches off automatically when the camera is mounted on a tripod, thus preventing feedback loops between the IS sensor and stabilizer motor vibrations.

Superb autofocus
The micro USM motor found in the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM employs ultra-sonic frequency vibrations to drive auto focus with unrivalled speed and near-silent operation. Good holding torque stops the lens with precision and accuracy, the instant it arrives at the correct focus point and without overshoot. A high-speed CPU and optimised AF algorithm result in a significant increase of AF speed compared to that of its predecessor.

A zoom ring locking mechanism is provided that locks the zoom at the wide-angle setting. This ensures that the lens is carried or stored in its most compact position, preventing possible damage caused by the lens extending and hitting obstacles when being carried mounted on a camera with a strap.

Pleasing defocused background
The EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM employs an electro-magnetic diaphragm (EMD) with a circular aperture. This helps create an attractive, even defocused background when isolating a subject at large apertures.

Image quality
By optimizing Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping, Canon's engineers have been effective in suppressing flare and ghosting--more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. By increasing light absorption, coatings reduce reflections off lens element surfaces to deliver crisp, undistorted images with natural color balance.

Focal length translates to 112-480mm equivalent in 35mm film format when fitted to EOS 20D and EOS 350D cameras.

The EOS system
The EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM includes distance metering information, providing compatibility with the E-TTL II flash system of late model cameras such as the EOS-1D Mark II N and EOS 5D . When used in conjunction with Canon's range of EX Speedlite flash units, the lens passes distance information to the flash algorithm for markedly improved flash exposure metering.

Accessories for the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM include the lens hood ET-65B and the lens pouch LP1222. In keeping with Canon's Kyosei philosophy of living in harmony with the environment, the lens features only lead-free glass.

Great lens for the money4
I use this lens on my 350D (AKA Digital Rebel XT). I bought it for 2 reasons:

1)My 70-300 Quantaray that works well enough for on my Rebel film camera gives me the infamous "Error 99" on my digital.

2)My daughter's high school graduation was coming up. The ceremony was to be on the outdoor football field
I shot nearly 300 frames with this lens at the graduation in very tough lighting. The distance from the bleachers to the ceremony required every bit of the 300mm focal length much of the time (even with the 1.6X crop factor of the digital rebel). With the IS I was able to get quite passable images with shutter speeds down to 1/80, although I stayed at 1/125 as much as possible by using higher ISO settings and the largest aperature. There is no way I would have been able to get decent images handheld at these focal lengths and shutter speeds without an IS lense (especially on a shaky high school bleacher!).

Considering the importance of the event, if I'd never found another use for the lens it would have been worth the cost for me. I have subsequently used it at an air show and a few other events. I've successfully used the "Mode 2" on the IS to get some cool motion blue on moving airplanes and cars as well.

If I have one complaint about the lens it's the speed (or lack thereof) of the autofocus. It's a bit sluggish but this isn't a shocker given that this is a consumer product and not professional gear.

Anyone purchasing this lens just needs to know what they are buying. Essentially, you are buying a 200 dollar lens with 400 dollars worth of IS added to it. One previous poster recommended getting the 70-200 F4L IS instead. That would be a great purchase aside from the fact that you'd be giving up 100mm of focal length and paying 400-500 more dollars. I considered that lens (and may get it down the road when I'm "rich") but this one will meet my (decidedly amateur) needs for quite some time!

Very happy with this purchase. I gave the lens as a gift, and the receiver was VERY happy with the lens. The pictures are coming out fantastic with no issue with focusing or anything else.

Best Lens for the Money5
This is a great lens. Nothing more really needs to be said. If you want to spend money on a "L" Series lens, go ahead, but it won't make you a better photographer and it won't really take pictures better than this lens.
