Extremely Useful and Must Have for COLLEGE Students!5
Both of these books out of the series are top notch books with great information and illustrations. But more importantly they are real world books, This is why I heartily recommend to the college crowd. Let's face it--we all want to make prune glazed coucous at the end of a long day with a side of sauteed brocolli and s honey glazed poached pear. But it ain't gonna happen. When I'm standing outside the fast food row at 6:45 pm I want to make the best choice--which acording to the autors is Arby's. Never wopuld have tried it and now I almost feel virtuous when I have their exact recommendation. Stay reasonable and in control with these two excellent tools.

Quite a surprise!5
My sister recommended this book to me after her young daughter was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. Her family has had to make significant changes in dietary habits, and the family doctor recommended the book. When my sister told me that it was better to eat an Egg McMuffin than a bagel with cream cheese, I figured that I had some more learning to do!

I've been working to lose weight and thought that I had been making "healthy" choices when faced with the need to pick up fast food during a busy workday. Wow! I was stunned. I am now a die-hard brown bagger when it comes to lunch for work!

I had NO IDEA about the calories, fats, carbs, sodium, etc., that was in the food I was eating! No wonder my attempts at weight reduction were always thwarted! And I thought I was doing the "right" things! Since discontinuing fast food and restaurant food, I have easily dropped 15 pounds in six weeks! This, while recovering from foot and ankle surgery, which means that I am not exercising anything more than my hands for typing and eyes for reading!

Buy the book, read it, use the information, change your life.

Quick, brief and to the point.5
Brief, quick reference, especially useful for diabetics. Not meant as an in depth source of nutritional information. The products pictured are helpful, but some selections are not available in all regions. Possibly publications for specific regions would be helpful: north, south, east, west. Then the food brand selections given would be available in each region. Similar food selections can be substituted for unavailable brands.
Some of the information found therein is amazing.

Product Description

Scott Kelby, the man who changed the "digital darkroom" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography--how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think).

This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: "If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You d say, 'OK,' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak."

This isn't a book of theory—it isn't full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic "tricks of the trade" to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button.

Here's another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. There's never been a book like it, and if you're tired of taking shots that look "OK," and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, "Why don't my shots look like that?" then this is the book for you.

Pretty Good Book5
I was hesitant about buying this book after reading some of the negative reviews concerning the corny humor. Now that I've read it, the information presented was worth a few groans and skipped paragraphs. While a "pro" wouldn't need this book, I think almost everyone else could get something out of it. The price is right too. (I just ordered the sequel.)

THIS REVIEW ONLY APPLIES TO THE KINDLE EDITION:2
Sometimes I am a real sucker. I surf the store on my Kindle and I see something I want badly and my shopaholicism kicks in... a little while later I see the "NEW" logo in my library and there is the new member of my Kindle book collection: a Photobook. With lots and lots of references to photos with highlights and hues and shadows and fades and tiny detail and blurry edges and sharp edges and... and... and.... :( waaah

I CAN'T SEE ANY OF THE PHOTOS OTHER THAN IN KINDLE NEWSPAPER PRINT !

What a dumb idea to create a Kindle version of a book that really needs high quality color print. I love my Kindle. I love reading on it. But it is NOT for photo courses and photo reference. Do not waste 10$ and just spend the extra 6$ or so to buy the tree-killing version of this. In this case it is worth the xtra.

As far as the book itself? A solid complete reference to newcomers and amateurs in phtography. Lots of stuff in there I could skip and lots that was wothwhile. If I had to choose however, I'd rather buy separate focused books that are best in class for their various topics: one about shutter and aperture, one about lighting, one about composition and so on. This one gives you everything but too much time is spent on stuff you will want to forget once you've read it.

Good luck
PS: I am a sucker for buying a photo reference on my Kindle. Doh.

Great little book4
I have to agree with one of the other reviewers about the corny style of humor that Kelby has. But if you can get past that (it's not THAT big a deal imo), there are some great nuggets contained within these pages.

I was about to write that this could easily be classified as a "library" book where you would be better off borrowing it instead of owning it, but after thinking about it, I realize that I find myself wanting to go back and re-read this.

I think it's just because there are SO many tips, you can't possibly retain it all if you just sit down and read it through.

I also think there is a little much in there about weddings - could/should probably be a separate book imo. You are either a wedding photog or you are not. If you aren't, this whole section is likely not interesting to you.

Anyway, I will be buying the second one in this series as well.

4 stars for value, content and "reusability". -1 star for writing style. I swear this guy could be my dad...thinks he is a lot funnier than he really is! :) Kidding Dad, you know I love ya!

I also plan to buy his not yet released Photoshop Elements 7 book which I hear is excellent.
